The Director of External Communications is responsible for managing strategic external communications programs primarily in support of the company’s commercial banking businesses, as well as some corporate issues. This individual will develop communications strategies to support business, reputation and brand goals for a range of opportunities, including product announcements, financing transactions, thought leadership, research and speaking opportunities. The desired candidate will be highly collaborative and able to manage a process that includes conceiving an idea, developing a strategy, successfully executing a plan and measuring results.


  • Support key business lines and operations within the Commercial Banking division including Commercial Finance, Real Estate Finance, Business Capital and Rail, among others through strategic integrated communications campaigns targeting national, regional, trade press and social/digital outlets
  • Write and edit news releases, presentations, thought leadership content and other materials
  • Recognize and act on marketplace trends and other external opportunities to showcase the bank’s capabilities, demonstrate thought leadership and drive awareness of its offerings and activities to customers and other external stakeholders
  • Develop credibility and strong working relationships with local, regional and national media covering the banking and financial services sectors and other specialty topics
  • Help drive the ongoing integration of traditional public relations and digital media strategies and tactics
  • Ensure news and information is delivered across and appropriate range of channels internally and externally





  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism or a related discipline preferred
  • 10+ years of communications experience
  • Highly strategic and proactive mindset with strong critical thinking skills
  • Superior writing skills, with an ability to simplify concepts and tailor messaging for specific audiences
  • Superior editorial, presentation and spokesperson skills
  • Experience developing enterprise-level communication strategies, plans, messaging, etc. and have working knowledge of new media and web/digital-based technologies
  • Ability to quickly develop the expertise and internal relationships required to operate effectively within a complex, high-tempo, matrixed organization
  • Proven issues management/crisis communications experience
  • Experience managing project teams and outside agency relationships
  • Deep familiarity with monitoring and measurement tools
  • Experience using social media to develop relationships and pursue external communications objectives and contribute to social media content strategies
  • A highly collaborative team player that is also a self-starter with strong leadership abilities
